Abstract
1,205,808. Microphones. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Oct., 1967 [22 Oct., 1966], No. 47651/67. Heading H4J. The frequency and directional characteristics of a cardioid microphone are changed by a removable adapter. Different adapters provide different characteristics. A known moving coil microphone capsule 1 (Fig. 1) comprises an annular permanent magnet 3, soft iron plates 4, 5 and a short-circuit ring 6, all held by a synthetic resin case 7. A moving coil 9 is connected to a diaphragm 8 protected by an aluminium hood 10. A space 11 behind the diaphragm communicates with a central duct 12 and, via the voice coil air gap, with an annular air chamber 16. The adapter 2 consists of a front part 30 and a rear part 31, the front part 30 having a central duct 32 and the two parts 30, 31 defining an annular space 40 which forms an air chamber G and communicates with the microphone capsule 1 through four parallel ducts 41. The central duct 32 communicates with ambient atmosphere through a rear opening and through four radial ducts 34. Acoustic resistances 33, 35 and 42 are provided. The capsule duct 12 and adapter duct 32 are aligned. The four adapter ducts 41 open on to an annular cavity 18 in the capsule rear face 13. Alternative adapter.-Radial ducts in the form of slots 61 communicate via a duct 62 with a microphone capsule (not shown).
