Abstract
1,126,161. Railway vehicle undercarriages. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 20 Feb., 1967 [1 March, 1966], No. 7961/67. Heading B7L. A truck assembly for a railway vehicle comprises a pair of transversely spaced rigid side frames 2, 4, Figs. 1 and 3 and a pair of longitudinally spaced wheel-axle assemblies 10, 12 mounted in the side frames and maintaining them in position, the invention being characterized in that each side frame has an inwardly directed projection 6, 8, respectively, the projections terminating in mutually-opposing transversely spaced surfaces 30, 32 Fig. 5, each surface having a cylindrical cavity 34, 36, respectively on a common axis for receiving cylindrical end portions 40, 42 of a swivel member 38 rotatably positioned between the surfaces 30, 32. A bolster 22 has connected at each end a pair of fore and aft directed expandable drag links, similar to those described in U. K. Specification 845,899, the free ends of which are connected to the vehicle body 116. The bolster extends over the side frames and is rotatably mounted by a pin 46 in the member 38. The ends of the bolster are each provided with a detachable hemi-spherical projection 50, Fig. 4, which pivotally engages in a hemispherical cavity 52 in a pillow block 54 slidable, at 56, on the top of the associated side frame. The ends of the bolster are connected through torsilastic bearings 104, 106 to support arms 100, 102, pivoted to lateral links 108, 110 pivoted to the vehicle body 116 and supporting air springs 112, 114. The links 108, 110 also mount resilient supports 118 which provide support for the body in event of malfunction of the air springs. Axle gears 14, 16 are driven by cardan shafts 18, 20 and the gears are provided with torque arms as described with reference to Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). Yaw motion of the bolster is controlled by hydraulic piston and cylinder devices controlled by speed sensors, as described with reference to Fig. 8 (not shown). Roll of the vehicle body relative to the bolster is controlled by piston and cylinder devices, described with reference to Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown).
