Description

KIT OF BLANKS, A BOX BLANK AND A LID BLANK Field of the inventionThe invention relates to a kit of blanks for forming a package having alid and a box shaped bottom. The invention also relates to a box blank for forming such a box shaped bottom and to a lid blank for forming such a lid of a package.
Background artWhen designing a package, it is often desirous to take into account a number of different design criteria. The package should e.g. often bedesigned such that it makes efficient use of the material, is easy to transport to the point of use, is easy to prepare for use, and provides a strong structure. lt should often be formed of a limited number of blanks. lt is often desirablethat it is strong during handling and stable in an erected state. l\/loreover, itshould often be capable of being erected into a box and lid and be used as abox and lid without the use of adhesive or any other similar means of keepingthe box and lid erected and/or closed, or at least with a minimum use of suchadhesive or similar means.
When designing a package having a lid and a bottom, it is oftendesirous that the package can be closed in a simple manner in an erectedstate. When designing a package that is of a smaller size it is typicallydesirous to consider also other aspects, such as that it should be easy tostack on shelves in the stores and that it should be easy to carry home.
Packages made from cardboard are beneficial since they do not takeup much space before they are erected, during for example transport. Thereexist numerous attempts to address the above design criteria in connection todesigning a package of cardboard material.
CN208813769 discloses a package forming a box. The box comprisesa lid and a bottom, wherein the lid is foldably connected to the bottom. However, this box requires the use of a number of separate pieces, such as the strings connected to Velcro-patches attached to the lid and to the bottom, and the provision of one or more separate handles inside the box and/or lid. ltmay especially be noted that such small pieces are easily lost duringtransportation, which results in that the package does not work properly.lt may be noted that the prior art document does not disclose a package which adequately addresses the set of design criteria that thepackage should make efficient use of the material, be formed of a limitednumber of blanks, be easy to erect, be closed in a simple manner in theerected state and provide a strong structure.
Summary of the invention lt is an object of the invention to provide a package which addresses atleast some of the set of design criteria described above, namely that thepackage should make efficient use of the material, be formed of a limitednumber of blanks, be easy to erect, be closed in a simple manner in theerected state and provide a strong structure. This object has been achieved by a kit of blanks for forming a packagehaving a lid and a box shaped bottom, the kit of blanks comprising:a lid blank for forming the lid of the package, the lid blank comprising:a centre panel, two opposing longitudinal rim portions arranged on two oppositelongitudinally extending sides of the centre panel, wherein each rim portioncomprises a plurality of rim panels arranged one after another along atransverse direction, the rim panels being foldably connected to the centrepanel and relative to each other by longitudinally extending fold lines andbeing configured to form two opposing, longitudinally extending double-walledrim portions, wherein the plurality of rim panels of one of the opposing rimportions comprises an integrally formed handle, the handle being positionedamong the plurality of rim panels such that there is at least one, preferably atleast two rim panels, more preferably three rim panels, between the handleand the centre panel and such that the handle, when the lid blank is erectedto form a lid, in a first position extends along an inside of the centre panel, wherein among the plurality of rim panels of each opposing rimportion, a panel configured to form an inside of the respective Iongitudinallyextending double-walled rim portion has at least one cut-out configured toform, when the lid blank is erected to form a lid, a locking recess on the insideof the respective Iongitudinally extending double-walled rim portion,a box blank for forming the box shaped bottom of the package, the boxblank comprising:a floor panel, two opposing side wall panels arranged on two oppositeIongitudinally extending sides of the floor panel, the side wall panels beingfoldably connected to the floor panel and being configured to form twoopposing, longitudinally extending side walls, wherein each side wall panel further comprises at least onelocking flap being positioned on a transverse side of the respective side wallpanel being opposite to the floor panel, the locking flaps being configured to,as seen in an erected state of the box blank, be folded outwards from the boxshaped bottom and extend along an outside of the respective side wall, wherein the respective locking flap of the box blank is configuredto be removably insertable into an associated locking recess of the lid blank, when the lid blank has been erected to form a lid and is placed onto thebottom, and thereby lock the lid and the bottom together to form a closedpackage, wherein, when the lid is placed onto the box shaped bottom, thehandle is configured such that it is selectively positioned in said first positionor in a second position in which second position the handle is folded outwardsfrom the closed package such as to form a handle for carrying the package. With such a design, there is provided a kit of blanks for a packagehaving a lid and a box shaped bottom. The lid is configured to be placed ontothe box shaped bottom and be kept in place by the locking flaps of the boxblank being configured to be removably insertable into the locking recesses of the lid blank when the lid blank has been erected to form a lid and is placed onto the bottom. There is also provided a kit of blanks for a package havingan integrated handle.
With the disclosed design of the |id blank, wherein each rim portionmay comprise the plurality of rim panels in order to form the double-walled rimportions, the provision of a stable |id is facilitated. The double-walled rimportions also facilitate the provision of the cut-outs to be formed and hence, for the locking recesses to be present. With the disclosed design of the boxblank, wherein each side wall panel may comprise at least one locking flap, together with the locking recesses of the |id blank, there is provided an easyway of locking the package. With this type of locking mechanism, there isprovided a package which is easy to close, and which is easy to lock.
With the disclosed design of the |id blank, where one of the opposingrim portions may comprise the integrally formed handle together with thedouble-walled rim portions, it is made possible to carry the package as it iswithout any need of any carrying bag. The double-walled rim portions and theopposing rim portion, which may comprise the handle, together facilitates theprovision of a stable handle. The locking mechanism is configured to keep the|id in place when the package is carried by using the handle. Thus, thelocking mechanism and the handle facilitate the provision of a package whichis easy to carry without any need of using a separate carrying bag.
With the rim panels foldably connected to the centre panel there isprovided a |id which is easy to erect, and which is easy to erect in a correctway. With the side wall panels foldably connected to the floor panel there isprovided a box shaped bottom which is easy to erect, and which is easy toerect in the correct way. With the |id and box shaped bottom being easy toerect in the correct way, the package as a whole may thus easily be arrangedin the correct way. Thus, it is facilitated to provide a package where the |id fitonto the box shaped bottom and with the parts being of the intendedconfiguration such that the locking flaps are removably insertable into thelocking recesses in the correct way. Thus, it is facilitated to provide a packagewhere the |id fit the box shaped bottom such that the package is easy to close and capable of being carried.
With this provided design, the package may be used as a standardpackage, e.g., standing in shelves stacked on top of each other or the like. However, the package may also be used as a carrying package similarly tohow a carrying bag is used. The package may be any type of package, butaccording to one non-limiting example the package may be a shoe box. Theshoe box may be placed on a shelf in a shoe store and when the customerwants to buy the shoes and take the shoe box from the store, the shoe box iseasy to carry without any need of a carrying bag. With this design, the rimpanel having the integrated handle can be folded 90° backwards and then thehandle may be continued to be folded another 90° backwards such that thehandle is pointing out from the lid. Hence, with this provided design, apackage which is stable, easy to erect and easy to close in the erected stateis achieved. Further, with this provided design, a package with an integratedhandle is achieved and there is no need for using carrying bags, such asplastic bags.
The lid blank may further comprise two opposing lid end wall panels, wherein each may be foldably connected to the centre panel by fold linesextending in the transverse direction, each lid end wall panel may compriseon each opposite transverse side a lid locking flap configured to be positionedbetween the rim panels of the longitudinally extending double-walled rimportions. The two opposing lid end wall panels may be configured to be keptin place by the lid locking flaps. Positioning of the lid locking flaps betweenthe rim panels of the longitudinally extended double-walled rim portions mayfacilitate provision of a stable lid. By the lid locking flaps that may bepositioned between the rim panels, the lid may be held in place when inerected state.
At least one of, preferably both of, the side wall panels of the box blankmay be provided with a central portion having a cut-out from a top edge of theside wall panel downwards a distance corresponding to a height of thelongitudinally extending double-walled rim portions such that the handle in itssecond position extends out of the package between a lower edge of thedouble-walled rim portion and an upper edge of said cut-out in the central portion of the side wall panel. With the design where both of the side wallpanels may be provided with a central portion having the cut-out, it may bepossible to place the lid onto the box shaped bottom in two orientations. Thelid can be placed onto the box shaped bottom in a first orientation, but it canalso be rotated 180° and still fit onto the box shaped bottom in a secondorientation. Since the cut-out corresponds to the height of the longitudinallyextending double-walled rim portions, the cut-out may be hidden when the lidis placed onto the box shaped bottom.
The box blank may further comprise two opposing box end wall panelsfoldably connected to the floor panel along fold lines extending in thetransverse direction, wherein each box end wall panel may have an endlocking flap foldably connected to a longitudinal side of the box end wall panelopposing the floor panel, and wherein the respective locking flap may beconfigured to be folded inwardly and extend alongside an inside of therespective box end wall panel.

By the corner flaps being folded to extendalongside the inside of the respective box end wall panel and the end lockingflaps of the box end wall panels being folded over the respective corner flaps, the box shaped bottom may be held in place when erected. This facilitatesprovision of a strong box end wall panel, which is beneficial for providing thedesired mechanical stability of the package.
The centre panel of the lid blank may comprise on each transversalside at least one recess and wherein each rim portion may comprise a lockingtab formed among the plurality of rim panels such that there are two rimpanels between the respective recess and the respective tab, the locking tab extending in a transversal direction away from the centre panel, as seen in aflat-laid state of the lid blank, whereby the respective locking tab may beconfigured to be inserted into the respective recess when the rim panels arefolded to form the two opposing, Iongitudinally extending double-walled rimportions and thereby lock the respective Iongitudinally extending double-walled rim portion in the erected state. By the respective locking tab beinginserted into the respective recess, the Iongitudinally extending double-walledrim portions may be held in place when the lid is in erected state. Thisfacilitates provision of a strong and stable Iongitudinally extending double-walled rim portion.
The lid blank is preferably made of a paper-based material. The boxblank is preferably made of a paper-based material. Paper-based materialmay provide a light weight package. Paper-based material is typicallyenvironmentally friendly and can often be recycled in a simple manner.Paper-based material may provide a package that is easy to transport andhandle before erection of the package. lt may be noted that the lid blank maybe made of other materials. lt may be noted that the box blank may be madeof other materials.
