Maseczki kosmetyczne (maski) to szczególna odmiana kosmetyków do jednorazowych zabiegów kosmetycznych na skórze. Występują w formie gęstych cieczy lub past zastygających po nałożeniu, tworzących twardą powłokę, ściśle przylegającą do skóry. Pod powłoką zachodzą procesy oczyszczania i wygładzania, ułatwione jest wnikanie substancji odżywczych, leczniczych i stymulujących. Po nałożeniu maski na skórę, w ciągu kilku minut w dużym stopniu odparowuje z niej woda. Na powierzchni naskórka pozostaje jedynie cienka warstwa zawierająca mieszaninę lipidów, glinek z pozostałościami wody. Ilość związanej wody zależy od obecności substancji higroskopijnych zawartych w preparacie kosmetycznym. W zależności od składu maski, warstwa ta może być wyraźnie widoczna, tworząc lepki i tłusty film lub przeciwnie, może tworzyć niewyczuwalną warstwę wodno-lipidową, utrzymującą się na skórze, nawet przez kilkanaście godzin. Znane są także rozwiązania technologiczne umożliwiające otrzymanie masek tzw. „peel off”, które po nałożeniu całkowicie zastygają na skórze, a po spełnieniu swojej funkcji są w pełni usuwane w postaci polimerowego filmu.Cosmetic masks (masks) are a special type of cosmetics for one-time cosmetic skin treatments. Do wytwarzania masek kosmetycznych wykorzystywane są różne grupy surowców m.in. woda, humektanty, emulgatory (np. stearynian sorbitanu, stearynian glicerylu), emolienty (np. estry kwasów tłuszczowych i alkoholi rozgałęzionych, woski naturalne roślinne, triacyloglicerole, wosk pszczeli, olej mineralny), modyfikatory lepkości (np. karbomer, guma celulozowa, poliwinylopirolidon), składniki absorbujące sebum (kaolin, montmorylonit), składniki nawilżające (np. mocznik, glikol propylenowy, hialuronian sodu), antyoksydanty (np. palmitynian askorbylu, wit.
