Abstract
A patient interface including an interfacing structure configured deliver the supply of air to at least the patient’s nose and two inlet conduits detachably connectable to the interfacing structure and adapted to deliver the supply of air to the interfacing structure. Each inlet conduit is configured to, in use, extend from the crown of the patient’s head or from in front of the crown of the patient’s head, along a respective side of the patient’s face between the patient’s eye and ear, and to the interfacing structure, each inlet conduit having a bottom portion configured to engage the interfacing structure in use, and a top portion in fluid communication with a supply of pressurized air in use. Each inlet conduit has at least one portion that is structured to allow movement between (1) an open phase (e.g. Fig. 3-1) in which the inlet conduit is configured to allow the flow of air sufficient to provide treatment of sleep disordered breathing and (2) at least a partially collapsed phase (e.g. Fig. 3-2a) in which the inlet conduit is at least partially collapsed to substantially impede or prevent the flow of air. Each inlet conduit is structured and configured to maintain the open phase without being pressurized by the supply of air.
Claims (21)
1. A patient interface for providing a supply of air from a source of air at positive pressure to a patient for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, the patient interface comprising: an interfacing structure configured to engage an entrance to the patient’s airways, the interfacing structure being adapted to deliver the supply of air to at least the patient’s nose; and two inlet conduits detachably connectable to the interfacing structure and adapted to deliver the supply of air to the interfacing structure, each inlet conduit being configured to, in use, extend from the crown of the patient's head or from in front of the crown of the patient’s head, along a respective side of the patient's face between the patient's eye and ear, and to the interfacing structure, each inlet conduit having a bottom portion configured to engage the interfacing structure in use, and a top portion in fluid communication with a supply of pressurized air in use, wherein each inlet conduit has at least one portion that is structured to allow movement between (1) an open phase in which the inlet conduit is configured to allow the flow of air sufficient to provide treatment of sleep disordered breathing and (2) at least a partially collapsed phase in which the inlet conduit is at least partially collapsed to substantially impede or prevent the flow of air, wherein each inlet conduit is structured and configured to maintain the open phase without being pressurized by the supply of air.
2. The patient interface according to claim 1, wherein each inlet conduit has a transverse cross-section that varies along its length.
3. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 and 2, wherein each inlet conduit has a cross-sectional area that changes along its length with an approximately constant hydraulic diameter.
4. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein each inlet conduit has a non-circular cross-sectional shape. 3097727
5. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein each inlet conduit has a relatively flat inwardly facing external surface.
6. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein each inlet conduit has a generally D-shaped cross-section.
7. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein each inlet conduit has a first section and a second section, the second section being relatively proximal the bottom portion as compared to the first section, wherein, in a transverse cross-section of the first section of each inlet conduit, the inlet conduit has a first width and a first height, and in a transverse cross-section of the second section of each inlet conduit, the inlet conduit has a second width and a second height, and wherein a ratio of the first width to the first height is greater than a ratio of the second width to the second height.
8. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein, at the top portion of each inlet conduit the width of the inlet conduit is greater than the height of the inlet conduit, and at the bottom portion of each inlet conduit the height of the inlet conduit is greater than the width of the inlet conduit.
9. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein each inlet conduit is molded from silicone material.
10. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein each inlet conduit has a concertina configuration.
11. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising a manifold adapted to, in use, be positioned on top of the patient’s head and to connect with the source of air at positive pressure. 3097727
12. The patient interface according to claim 11, wherein the manifold and the inlet conduits are integrally formed as a one-piece structure.
13. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the interfacing structure comprises a pair of tube portions, each tube portion being adapted to engage the bottom portion of a respective one of the inlet conduits.
14. The patient interface according to claim 13, wherein, when each inlet conduit is attached to the respective tube portion, there is no visible step change across the respective tube portion and the bottom portion of the respective inlet conduit.
15. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the interfacing structure is an under-the-nose interface.
16. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the interfacing structure comprises silicone.
17. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein the interfacing structure includes at least one vent hole.
18. The patient interface according to any one of claims 1 to 17, wherein the interfacing structure includes a single orifice adapted to interface with both of the patient’s nostrils.
