Abstract

592948 Disclosed is a cable with an infra-red or IR reflecting sheath to protect the cable from overheating. The cable has at least one inner electrical conductor, and an insulating jacket, is of, or is enclosed in an infrared reflecting layer adapted to reflect incoming infrared radiation where the infrared reflecting layer incorporating one or more infrared reflecting pigments. The insulating jacket incorporates or consists of the infrared reflecting layer or the infrared reflecting layer is applied over the insulating jacket as an external layer. The cable can have the electrically insulating jacket applied over the electrically conducting core, the infrared reflecting layer applied over the electrically insulating layer, and an abrasion resistant outer skin that is transparent to infrared radiation is applied over the infrared reflecting layer. The infrared transparent layer includes perylene. The infrared reflecting pigments are mixed metal oxides of one or more of the oxides of titanium, iron, and cobalt.
