Abstract

Disclosed is a light gauge support structure for supporting a cementitious floor slab acting together in a composite of the support structure with the cementitious slab providing mutual support. The support structure comprises light gauge sheeting for supporting the cementitious slab in the resultant composite along with a plurality of joists for underlying and supporting the light gauge sheeting. Each joist being sufficiently closely spaced to adjacent joist(s) so that the gauge sheeting is able to support the cementitious slab thereon once cured. The structure has at least one channel section that has top and bottom flanges interconnected by a web formed from light gauge steel. Each joist comprises either of top and bottom chords interconnected by web members in an open web construction, or a beam that comprises a planar elongate web interconnecting opposing torsionally rigid elongate hollow flanges. Each joist has an open web construction, the web members are aligned perpendicular to the top and bottom chords, and external faces of the webs are welded to the chords at spacings along the joist that are equal to the depth of the joist. The joists are supported by the at least one channel section, the joists projecting from the at least one channel section and having one end thereof disposed between the top and bottom flanges, whereby the top chord or one of the hollow flanges can be secured to the top flange, and the bottom chord or the other of the hollow flanges can be secured to the bottom chord, respectively. The joists are able to be secured to the channel section by self drilling, self tapping fasteners. A shear member is fixed to some joists so becomes partially embedded in the slab.
