Abstract

A method of producing an enteric bacterium having enhanced antigenic properties selected from: Campylobacter sp, Yersinia sp, Bacteroides sp, Klebiella sp, Enterobacter sp, Gastrospirillum sp, Salmonella sp, Shigella, sp Aeromonas, Vibrio sp Clostridium sp, Enterococcus sp and Eschericha coli Comprising growing a culture of enteric bacteria in vitro in a combination of conditions comprising; a) a divalent cation chelator selected from 1.0-25ìM of BAPTA/AM, 0.5-10ìM EGTA and 1.0-100ìM EGTA/AM; b) at a temperature between 30-42oC; c) in air or an microaerophillic condition, wherein the microaerophillic condition comprises i) 5-20% CO2 with 80-95% air ii) 5-10% O2 with 10-20% CO2 with about 70-85% N2 for a sufficient time so that the culture is in a growth phase at about early log phase, between early log phase and stationary phase, or at about stationary phase, wherein the enhanced antigenic property is a higher level of immunogenic antigenicity when compared to the antigenic property of bacteria from a culture of Helicobacter species in brain heart infusion broth supplemented with bovine calf serum.
