Abstract
Preservative that has been impregnated into wood is fixated by exposing the wood to a pre-heated aqueous heat transfer fluid in a tank 3. The heat transfer fluid is then removed from the tank and the wood held under reduced pressure. Heated rinse water is then introduced into the tank. The rinse water is heated by the outgoing heat transfer fluid. The pressure in the tank is raised to atmospheric pressure and the wood and rinse water removed from the tank. In this process, emphasis is placed on reducing the level of contamination of the aqueous heat transfer fluid resulting from wood extractives, unfixed preservative and/or particulate matter such as "sludge". This contamination may be reduced by one or more of cooling the heat transfer fluid; filtering the heat transfer fluid and rinse water; adding a pH adjustment agent to the heat transfer fluid and rinse water; and establishing a pressure in the tank 3 which opposes movement of wood extractives and unfixed preservatives into the heat transfer fluid and rinse water.
