Patents Act 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION ORGANIC SUPPLEMENT FOR ANIMALS
I, KATHRINE BRIDGET DAVIS, of Calina, Inland Road, Waiau, New Zealand, ■ an Australian citizen, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:

The present invention relates to an organic supplement for animals, said supplement containing selenium. The supplement is more specifically for use by horses. The selenium is in a form suitable for biochemical use by the animal.
The presence of selenium in, for example, racing horses can assist oxygenation of the tissues. This in turn assists in the optimal performance of a horse at key times. The presence of selenium can also enhance other biochemical characteristics, for example increasing the efficiency of the immune system.
Selenium is known to be an element required in trace amounts by animals. However, in selenium deficient countries such as New Zealand, most known methods of providing a selenium supplement in either ethical or non-ethical concentrations (as hereinafter defined) are either inefficient in their means of administration to the animal (e.g. salt licks) poorly bioavailable or expensive (injection).
An object of the present invention is the provision of an organic supplement containing selenium for animals which is simple to administer to the animal, and also efficient in terms of the uptake of selenium by the animal. A further object of the invention is the provision of an organic supplement which can help enhance the performance of an animal under working conditions.
As used herein, the term "ethical" refers to a compound or mixture in which selenium is present in a concentration of three or more parts per million (3 ppm). The term "non-ethical" refers to a compound or mixture in which selenium is present in a concentration of less than three parts per million (3 ppm). This definition for the concentration of selenium in a compound may differ from that used in any Licensed Animals Remedy Act. It is also different from that used for horses.
2
The present invention provides an organic supplement for animals, said supplement including: selenium in a concentration in the range 0.001 to 130 ppm, said selenium being contained in an organic form suitable for administration to animals; Vitamin E in a form suitable for administration to animals; germanium in a concentration in the range 1 milligram to 1 gram in a 15 gram dose; Vitamin A in a concentration in the range 1,000 to 3,000 i.u. in a 15 gram dose; and a base which includes bulk fillers and a flavouring.
The supplement also includes one or more of the following: chromium in a concentration in the range 0.5 milligrams to 1.5 milligrams; Vitamin D in a concentration of approximately 1,000 i.u. and Vitamin E in a concentration of approximately 500 i.u. in said dose; these concentrations being those of each component in a dose of 15 grams.
Preferably the selenium is in the form of either selenomethionine or selenium amino acid chelate. However other organic forms of selenium could also be used.
Preferably the germanium is in the form germanium amino acid chelate, and the chromium is in the form chromium amino acid chelate. Preferably said base includes maltodextrins or a natural sugar (such as lactose or fructose), rice bran, soya fibre or a soya protein isolate and apple flavouring. Sorbitol may also be present. Soya protein isolate is preferred over soya fibre as it includes amino acids which are either essential or desirable to bodily functions.

By way of example only two examples are given of formulae for a supplement suitable for oral administration to horses.
