Abstract

When increasing the capacity of a cellular radio network, a second base transceiver station of less power is often installed within the original cell to serve traffic hot spots in the original cell. The final outcome is strongly dependent on how well the location of the traffic hot spot and the number of mobile stations can be defined. In the invention, the location of traffic hot spots and the number of mobile stations are measured by locating such a test transmitter in the cell which will cause interference to the signal received by mobile stations. Any changes caused by the interference can be detected in the quality reporting of mobile stations.
