Description

The invention relates to a device for closing a sterilizable can by means of a lid and an elastic sealing ring which, when the can is opened, is pulled out of a gap between the can and the lid by means of one or more tongue-like protrusions.

The purpose of the invention is to facilitate the opening of the box equipped with a removable sealing ring.

According to the invention, this is achieved by the upper edge of the open box or the outer edge of the lid engaging so deeply in the sealing ring that two ring parts connected by a step are formed which will separate from each other along the step, one ring part being pulled out together with the tongue-like protrusion when the box series is opened.

Some embodiments of the invention shall be explained in more detail with reference to the drawings which show part of a cross-section through the edge of the lid, the box carite and the sealing ring according to the invention, the figures on the left showing an attached lid and the figures on the right showing a closed lid.

In the embodiment example according to fig. 1 op, 2 is a tinned can denoted by 1 and its lid by 2. The edge 3 of the can is bent outwards and carries a sealing ring 4 of rubber or similar elastic material. In profile, the ring 4 is provided with a slot which divides the ring into a smaller upper part 6 and a larger lower part 7, as the parts are connected to each other by means of a step 8. In the slot 5, the edge 3 of the box series 1 engages. The diameter of the ring 4 is chosen in such a way in relation to the outer diameter of the edge 3 that, as a result of its elastic stretchability, the ring is stretched over the edge of the box and is held firmly due to the tension. The lid 2 is bent in its edge in a U-shape and grips with its outer part 9 over the sealing ring which sits on the edge 3 of the box, so that the upper part G of the ring will lie in the corner 10 of the lid edge and the lower part 7 of the ring between the lid edge and box series 1 or the edge of the box 3- At one or more places on the circumference, the ring 4 has a tongue 11 directed downwards which serves as a grip when opening the box and is, as shown in the figure, immediately behind the section plane of the drawing.

To close the box, the lid edge 9 is bent against the box to form an edge part 9a using a device common to this purpose.Thereby, the sealing ring 4 will be attacked on all surfaces of its circumference with the exception of the gap 13 and placed under elastic compression against the box edge and against the lid edge and thereby providing a tight closure of the box.

To open the box, the tongue 11 on the ring part 7 is pulled out of the slot 13 and this is then deformed until the step 8 is torn off and the ring part 7 can be pulled completely out of the slot 13. As the slot 13 is wide enough, the lid 2 can be lifted from box edge 3-

In the embodiment example according to fig. 3°S 4 is the elastic sealing ring connected to the loose lid. In the case of a hook-shaped conversion, the outer part 52 of the lid edge 51 is driven into the compact sealing ring 53 in such a way that the ring is clamped with a part 54 • The original profile of the ring 53 can be rectangular or square, and such a profile has the advantage that the ring can be easily cut out of a correspondingly profiled rudder together with the tongue 55. The cone-like shape of the ring plate 5° acts when the lid is placed on the box together with the curved edge 57 of the box as a centering and thus facilitates the introduction to the closing operation. This operation consists in the lid edge 51 being pressed downwards so that the ring 53 is pressed firmly and tightly against the contact rafts under elastic compression, see Fig. 4 - When the ring 53 is pulled out with the help of the tongue 55, a narrow step 58 is torn over so that a part 59 can

The closure according to the invention is not limited to cans with a circular cross-section, but can be used on cans and lids of any shape, especially oval, square or polygonal.

The provision of the closure according to the invention can be done with ordinary closing machines and therefore without difficulty introduced in a company in which cans are to be closed, i.e. preferably in the canning industry.
