Abstract

Iron prepns. prepns. in dry form or as aq. injectable solns., for treating iron deficiency, comprise a complex of Fe and a water-swellable polymer of (a) >=1 of arabonic, gluconic and glucoheptonic acid and/or their salts and/or lactones; (b) >=1 of glycerol, polyglycerol, tetritol, pentitol, hexitol and heptitol and/or their derivs. partially esterified with 1-5C alkyl and/or hydroxyalkyl gps.; and (c) >=1 dihalohydrin, epihalohydrin and/or derived diepoxide. The dry prepn. pref. contain 5-40, esp. 20-35, wt.% Fe, and the aq. solns. pref. contain 5-100, esp. ca 50, mg Fe/ml. The prepns. are pref. prepd. by reacting a water-soluble FeIII cpd., with the polymer in aq. soln., the pH being adjusted so that it is 10-14 and the end of the reaction, pptg. the product, pref. with EtOH and opt. purifying by repeated re-pptn., drying and opt. dissolving in H2O. The polymers themselves can also be used as viscosity regulators for foods, pharmaceuticals, herbicides and detergents, as blood plasma substitutes, enzyme carries, coil improves, liquid cements or glues, plastics interms., pptn. and flocculating agents in beer prodn., electrolyte additives, detoxicating agents and X-ray contrast agents (as Ba complex).
