Abstract

A conc. liq. fabric softener comprises 25-55 wt.% of an active system comprising (A) a fabric-substantive agent of water solubility >5 wt.% at pH 2-5 and 20 degrees C, and (B) a fabric-softening component, in the wt. ratio 6:1-1:4. (A) is a 10-24C alkyl-pyridinium salt or a cpd. of formula: R(R1)2+N (CH2)n+N(R1)2 mR1A(-) (where R is 10-24C alkyl or alkenyl or RO(CH2)n1; R1 is H, (C2H4O)pH, (C3H6O)qH, (C2H4O)p'(C3H6O)q'H, 1-3C alkyl or (CH2)n2N(R')2; R' is H, (C2H4O)pH, (C3H6O)qH, (C2H4O)p'(C3H6O)q'H or 1-3C alkyl; n, n1 and n2 are 2-6; m is 1-5; p, q and (p'+q') are 0 or a number such that (p+q+p'+q') =25; and A(-) is >=1 anion). (B) is (1) R2R3R4R5N + X- (where R2 and R3 are 12-24C hydrocarbyl; R4 and R5 are 1-4C hydrocarbyl and X- is an anion); (2) a salt of formula: (whre R6 is 1-4C alkyl; R9 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R8 is 8-25C alkyl; R7 is 9-25C alkyl; and A- is an anion); (3) a >=16C fatty ester of a 1-24C mono- or poly-hydric alcohol and a mono- or poly-carboxylic acid with 1-24C in the hydrocarbon chain, at least one hydrocarbon group having >=12C; (4) a >=16C ether of a 10-24C fatty alcohol and i-8C mono- or poly-alcohol; or (5) R10XR11 (where R10 and R11 have 12-24C and 1-6C in an alkyl chain opt. interrupted by O; and X is S, CONH or NHCO). The softener has good pourability and water-dispersability characteristics.
