Abstract

The ion source of a neutron generator for the bombardment of a target plate by an ion beam to generate neutrons, has a hollow anode between two cathodes, together with means of exciting an axial magnetic field. The anode has >=3 symmetrically positioned holes, and the cathode on the side of the anode facing the target plate has a separate ion outlet aligned to each opening in the anode. The axes of the openings in the anode and the corresponding openings in the cathode are parallel and the face of the ion source turned towards the target plate is concave for converging the ion beams on the target. Design solves the problems of earlier generators associated with the excessive heating of the cathode and damage to the active layer of the target plate, so that the lifetime of the neutron generator is shortened considerably. The present generator has a very large neutron output amounting to 1012 and more neutrons per second. In spite of a low gas pressure a large flow of ions is achieved.
