Abstract
A mixt. of a carrier medium and a substrate insoluble in the medium, such as water and oil, gas and soot, etc., is sepd. using >=2 packs of filtration material. A stream of the mixt. is fed through the compacted filter material, and the solid matter remaining in the filter is removed by the mixt. This is fed through the pack so that the filtration material is set in motion, and the mixt. with the matter in the filter is released, the flow then passes through a collecting chamber and through a pack of filtration material. The mixt. is fed through a filtration pack to coalesce flocculate substance(s) to be isolated from the carrier. The stream of the mixt. is led through a collecting chamber and the coalesced or flocculated matter is sepd. by gravity. The stream of the processed carier is fed through another pack of filtration material which filters out the whole of the matter remaining in the carrier; filtration material being used alternately. In the first step the mixt. flows upwards and in the third step downwards through the packs of filtration material. Two packes of filtration material are flowed through alternately in the first and third processing steps, and at the commencement of the flowing through in the third step of a filter pack, the mixt. on the downstream side of the filter pack, is again processed in a first, second and third step. Dissolved impurities may be converted by chemical binding agents into matter which can be collected. An ion exchanger and/or an absorbent ben for the impurities may be used. The installation makes it possible to separate large quantities of mixts. per unit of time, over long periods, without maintenance.
