Abstract

Mixed carboxymethyl-hydroxy alkyl cellulose ethers, in which the hydroxy alkyl gps. contain 2-4 C, are prepared by reacting carboxymethyl celluose, an alkali metal hydroxide, and chloracetate, then reacting the product with a liquid proton-doanting acid. The cellulose deriv. is then reacted with an alkylene oxide (2-4C) in the presence of at least 0.01wt% of a catalyst, for example an alkali metal hydroxide, and a hydroxy alkyl ether. Cpds. are useful suspension stabilisers.
