Description
Wrapper and method for wrapping and discharging round bales TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention relates to a wrapper for wrapping round bales of crop 5 material, comprising a frame, a wrapping device mounted on the frame to wrap wrapping material about the round bale, a wrapping table mounted on the frame to support the round bale during wrapping, the wrapping table being rotatable between a wrapping position and a bale release position, and an actuator for moving the wrapping table from the wrapping position to the bale release position. 10 The invention further relates to a method for discharging wrapped round bales from a wrapper.
PRIOR ART
Round balers or rotobalers are known in the field of agriculture and 15 produce round bales from crop material (such as hay, cotton, straw, silage). The round baler compresses the crop material into compact round bales.
The term round bales in this text is also used to refer to bales 40 which have a substantially cylindrical shape, with two flat, circular end faces 41 and one cylindrical face 42 provided in between the two end faces (see Fig. 4).
20 Different types of round balers are known, such as round balers with a fixed chamber and round balers with a variable chamber. An example of a round baler is provided by DE2443838C3.
Round balers are often used in combination with a wrapper. A wrapper is arranged to receive a round bale and wrap it in a plastic film. The 25 wrapper may receive the round bale directly from a round baler or may be arranged to pick up a round bale from the ground. The received round bale is positioned on a wrapping table and wrapped by a wrapping device. After the round bale is wrapped, the round bale is discharged from the wrapping table and positioned on the ground. Wrappers are for instance described in EP674477, 30 GB2245878 and WO2011105890.
For instance, DE29911916U1 describes a wrapper comprising a mechanism for keeping the wrapper table in a horizontal position even in uneven terrain to prevent the bale from shifting or falling of the wrapping table during wrapping.
2
Discharging the wrapped round bale is a delicate process, wherein damage of the round bale should be prevented or at least minimized. The round bale may for instance be deformed as a result of the impact with the ground. WO2011/105890 describes a wrapper comprising an unloading device comprising 5 an unloading arm and a ground support for unloading the round bale from the wrapper.
In uneven terrain, care must be taken that the round bale doesn’t role away, as this may lead to dangerous situations. Round bales are preferably positioned on the ground on one of their end faces in order to prevent the bales 10 from rolling away.
US2007/0209530 describes a rotobaler which is provided with an inclination sensor that recognizes an inclination to the side as well as in the longitudinal direction. This inclination sensor generates a signal coupled to a computer that, in turn, controls a display arrangement in order to indicate whether 15 a bale that is to be unloaded from the rotobaler can be safely unloaded considering the existing inclination of the rotobaler. In the event an unsafe inclination is present, either the computer sends out a control signal which blocks an operation for depositing the bale on the ground, or causes the bale to be oriented in such a way during the discharge process that the longitudinal 20 centreline of the bale is parallel to the inclination of the slope.
US2003/0024407A1 describes a round baler for agricultural stalk material in combination with a wrapper for wrapping a round bale in film. A sloping plane in the form of a chute device for the finished round bale is provided between the round baler and the wrapper. To ensure reliable and quick transportation of the 25 round bale to the wrapper chute device is adjustable, i.e. the chute device may be moved about a horizontal axis of rotation. The axis of rotation is perpendicular with respect to the direction in which the round bale rolls.
This document further describes that there are provided inclination measuring means, which measure the slant of the round baler or the wrapper 30 relative to the vertical. The inclination of the chute device is controlled or adjusted automatically as a function of the measured slant. The angle of tilt of the wrapper table for discharge of the round bale and/or tilting speed of the wrapping table may be controlled or adjusted as a function of the measured slant.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
It is an object to provide a wrapper for wrapping round bales of crop material and discharging the round bales in a reliable way.
According to an aspect there is provided a wrapper for wrapping 5 round bales of crop material, comprising - a frame, - a wrapping device mounted on the frame to wrap wrapping material about the round bale, - a wrapping table mounted on the frame to support the round bale during 10 wrapping, the wrapping table being rotatable between a wrapping position and a bale release position, - an actuator for moving the wrapping table from the wrapping position to the bale release position, characterized in that the wrapper further comprises 15 - a controller arranged to determine at least one round bale parameter, the controller being further arranged to control the speed and/or the length of a stroke of the actuator based on the at least one determined round bale parameter.
By determining round bale parameters the discharging or releasing of the round bale from the wrapping table can be controlled in a more accurate and 20 reliable way to ensure that the round bale is discharged from the wrapping table carefully to minimize the risk of damage. Possibly it can be ensured that the round bale ends up in a desired discharge position and orientation, for instance positioned on one of its end faces. This is in particular advantageous when used on a slope.
25 The characteristics of the round bale, such as the dimensions or the weight, influence the trajectory and speed of the round bale when being discharged from the wrapping table by actuating the wrapping table from the wrapping position to the bale release position. For instance, for round bales that are relatively light-weighted the movement of the wrapping table from the wrapping 30 position to the bale release position may be performed relatively slowly, to limit the release velocity of the round bale and thereby prevent damage of the round bale.
According to a further example, for relatively large round bales (having a large diameter), the wrapping table could be tilted less far to limit the release velocity of the round bale and thereby prevent damage of the round bale.
4
This may be done by controlling the length of the stroke of the actuator, which in fact controls the upper dead end position of the actuator.
The controller may store or have access to predetermined tables or the like which are used to adjust the length and/or stroke of the actuator based on 5 the determined parameters. For instance, based on a determined size and weight, the tables may provide a preferred length and/or stroke.
The controller may comprise and/or may be arranged to communicate with sensors, meters and the like determining the round bale parameters and possible further parameters which will be described in more detail 10 below.
According to an embodiment the round bale parameters comprise at least an indication of one of a bale diameter (D), a bale length (L) and a bale weight.
According to an embodiment the wrapper comprises a bale 15 dimension meter for determining the dimensions of the round bale, such as in indication of a bale diameter (D) and a bale length (L). The bale dimension meter may be an optical device for determining the bale dimensions. The optical device may comprise a camera, such as a CCD camera in combination with a computer device capable of performing image recognition techniques for determining the 20 dimensions of the round bale from an image registered by the camera.
According to an embodiment the wrapper comprises a weighing device for determining an indication of the bale weight. The weighing device may be integrated in the wrapping table.
According to an embodiment the wrapper is arranged to receive at 25 least one round bale parameter from a round baler or via manual input. Receiving round bale parameters from a round baler is an advantageous and reliable way of obtaining round bale parameters. Some round balers can produce round bales with different dimensions depending on the settings of the round baler and/or depending on the amount of crop material that is received by the round baler. The 30 round baler may also comprise means to determine the weight of a round bale. This information can be send to the controller of the wrapper.
According to an embodiment wherein the controller is arranged to determine a velocity of the wrapper. The controller may be coupled to the velocity meter of a towing device towing the wrapper. The controller may also comprise or 5 be arranged to communicate with a positioning unit, such as a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) based unit, to determine the current velocity of the wrapper. By determining the current velocity of the wrapper moving over the ground surface, the speed and/or the length of a stroke of the actuator may be 5 controlled to take into account the velocity of the wrapper.
According to an embodiment the wrapping table is movable between the wrapping position and the bale release position by tilting the wrapping table about a substantially horizontal axis of rotation. This may be done by lifting a leading edge of the wrapping table and/or lowering a trailing edge of the wrapping 10 table to discharge a bale at a rear side of the wrapper. Alternatively, this may be done by lifting a side edge of the wrapping table and/or lowering an opposite side edge to discharge a bale.
According to an embodiment the wrapper further comprises a bale tipper for receiving a round bale rolling from the wrapping table and tip the round 15 bale sideways to position the round bale on one of its end faces. The bale tipper may be an obstruction that obstructs the rolling of the bale and is positioned asymmetrically, thereby tipping the bale on one of its end faces. The bale tipper may be positioned at the rear side of the wrapper in case the bale is released at the rear side of the wrapper. The bale tipper may be positioned at the end of 20 guiding elements, such as rails, over which the bale can roll from the wrapping table towards the ground.
According to an embodiment the bale tipper comprises guiding elements for receiving a rolling round bale from the wrapping table with an asymmetrically positioned tipping member at the end of the guiding elements to tip 25 the round bale sideways. The tipping member may be a bobbin.
The guiding elements may be one or more elongated elements provided at an angle with respect to the ground to guide the round bale from the wrapping table towards the ground. The tipping member is positioned asymmetrically, i.e. to the left or right with respect to the guiding elements to tip 30 the round bale to the right or left respectively.
According to an embodiment the position of the tipping member is adjustable in a transversal direction based on the at least one determined round bale parameter. Based on a selection of an angle of orientation of the ground, a bale diameter, a bale length, a velocity of the wrapper, a bale weight, a bale 6 velocity at tipping member the transversal position of the tipping member may be adjusted to ensure accurate and reliable discharge of the round bale. The transversal direction is substantially horizontal and substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the guiding elements.
5 According to an embodiment the controller is arranged to determine an indication of the velocity of the bale at the tipping member by means of a bale velocity sensor, wherein the controller is arranged to control the transversal position of the tipping member based on at least the determined indication of the velocity of the bale at the tipping member. By measuring the bale velocity at the 10 tipping member it can be monitored if the impact between the bale and the tipping member is not too high, which could cause damage of the bale and/or the wrapping material around the bale. Also, it can be monitored that the impact between the bale and the tipping member is not too low, which could result in failure of positioning the round bale on one of its end faces. Based on the 15 measured bale velocity the transversal position of the tipping member may be adjusted for the next bale.
If the bale velocity at the tipping member is too high, the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator could be reduced. If the bale velocity at the tipping member is too low, the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the 20 actuator could be increased.
According to an embodiment the controller is arranged to determine an angle of orientation of the ground. For instance, on uneven terrain, such as a slope, the orientation of the ground may be such that the speed and /or length of the stroke of the actuator needs to be adjusted to ensure that the round bale is 25 actually discharged from the wrapping table while at the same time it is ensured that the round bale is not discharged from the wrapping table with a velocity that is too high. The angle of orientation may be determined with an inclination sensor. The inclination sensor may simply determine the angle of orientation of the wrapper 1 or may determine the angle of orientation of the ground on which the 30 round bale will be positioned or may determine both , where both angles can be used to control the discharging of the round bale. The term angle as used here comprises information about the tilt of the ground and a direction of the tilt with respect to the wrapper to distinguish between a upward slope, a downward slope, a sideways slope etc.
7
According to an embodiment at least one of the speed of the stroke of the actuator, the length of the stroke of the actuator and a transversal position of a tipping member as part of a bale tipper is controlled based on the determined angle of orientation of the ground.
5 According to an aspect there is provided a method for discharging wrapped round bales from a wrapper, the round bales being wrapped on a wrapping table, the method comprising - actuating an actuator to pivot the wrapping table from a wrapping position to a bale release position, 10 characterized by - determining at least one round bale parameter, and - controlling the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator based on the at least one determined round bale parameter.
15 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Embodiments will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings in which corresponding reference symbols indicate corresponding parts, and in which: - Fig. 1 - 3 schematically depicts a wrapping table according to different 20 embodiments, - Fig. 4 schematically shows a round bale,
- Fig. 5 schematically depicts a controller according to an embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
25 The wrapper 1 comprises a frame 2 which is supported on a ground surface 50 by wheels 3. The front end 4 of the wrapper 1 can be connected to a towing vehicle (not shown) to tow the wrapper over the ground surface 50. The wrapper 1 can move over the ground in a direction of movement A. The wrapper has a longitudinal body axis which is parallel to the direction of movement A and 30 runs in between the left and right hand wheels 3 of the wrapper 1. The wrapper 1 may also be connected to a round baler (not shown) and arranged to receive round bales from the round baler.
The wrapper 1 may further be connected to a hydraulic power source of the towing device.
8 A wrapping table 5 and a wrapping device 6 are mounted on the frame 2. A loading device (not shown) may be provided to load a bale from the ground surface 50 on the wrapping table 5 to enable wrapping of the bale. The loading device will usually be mounted at the front side of the wrapper 1.
5 Alternatively, the loading device (not shown) may be positioned at the side of the wrapper 1 or may be arranged to receive a round bale from a round baler (not shown). The wrapper may be connected to the round baler at the front end 4 of the wrapper 1.
The wrapping table 5 is configured to support a bale during wrapping. 10 The wrapping table 5 is rotatable between a wrapping position (Fig. 1) and a bale release position (Fig. 2). In the wrapping position the support surface of the wrapping table is substantially horizontal to provide a proper support to a bale during wrapping (Fig. 1).
After wrapping the wrapping table 5 may be pivoted to the bale 15 release position at an angle a of for example 45 degrees with respect to the horizontal, as shown in Figure 2, to release the bale from the wrapping table 5 at the backside of the wrapper 1. Movement towards the bale release position is obtained by one or more actuators 20. The actuator 20 may be a hydraulic actuator 20. In order to energize the hydraulic actuator 20 it may be connected to 20 a hydraulic power source of the towing device. The actuator 20 is at one end connected to the frame 2 and with its other end connected to the wrapping table 5. The actuator 20 is arranged to perform an extending stroke which is characterized by a certain length and a certain velocity. The speed and length of the stroke of the actuator 20 may be controlled by a proportional valve.
25 The wrapping table or at least part thereof may rotate to the bale release position about an axis of rotation that is substantially horizontal and substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal body axis of the wrapper 1. According to such an embodiment, the round bale is discharged at the rear side of the wrapper 1 by rolling the bale off the wrapping table 5.
30 Alternatively, the wrapping table may rotate to the bale release position about an axis of rotation that is substantially horizontal and substantially parallel to the longitudinal body axis of the wrapper 1. According to such an embodiment, the bale is discharged at a transversal side of the wrapper 1.
9
Some wrapping tables 5 may also be tilted forwardly to a bale receiving position, in which the wrapping table 5 is in a favourable position for loading a bale on the wrapping table 5, for instance by the loading arm, or another suitable device or construction.
5 The wrapping device 6 is configured to wrap a bale supported on the wrapping table 5 in film material which is provided on rolls 7. By rotation of the bale on the wrapping table 5 about its own body axis (which is for instance orientated substantially horizontally and perpendicular to the longitudinal body axis of the wrapper), and simultaneous rotation of the rolls of wrapping material 7 10 around the bale, the bale can be completely wrapped in wrapping material.
The wrapping table 5 may for instance comprise one or more conveyor belts for rotating the round bale about its own body axis. The one or more conveyor belts may be relatively loosely provided around pulleys such that the contact area of the round bale when being positioned on the conveyor belts is 15 below the upper sides of the pulleys to prevent the round bale from falling of the wrapping table 5 when the conveyor belts are set in motion.
According to a known alternative (not shown), the wrapping device 6 is stationary and the bale is rotated about its own body axis which is orientated substantially horizontally) while at the same time the wrapping table 5 is rotated 20 about a substantially vertical axis of rotation.
Wrapping tables 5 and wrapping devices 6 are well-known in the art, and any suitable combination may be applied in the wrapper according to the invention.
Fig. 3 schematically shows a wrapper 1 in combination with a bale 25 tipper 200 provided at the rear side of the wrapper 1. According to this embodiment, the wrapping table 5 is arranged to discharge the round bale at the rear side of the wrapper 1 towards the bale tipper 200.
When the wrapping table is actuated to assume the release position, the body axis of the round bale is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal 30 axis of the wrapper 1 such that the round bale rolls off the wrapping table 6 towards the bale tipper 200.
The bale tipper 200 is arranged to receive such a rolling round bale and tip the round bale to the left or right to position the round bale on one of its circular end faces. The bale tipper comprises one or more guiding elements 210, 10 which may be formed as elongated rails or the like. The guiding elements 210 may be at an angle with respect to the ground surface 50 to guide the round bale towards the ground surface 50. The bale tipper 200 further comprises a tipping member 211 which is provided at or near an end of the guiding element 210 to tip 5 the round bale sideways. The tipping member 211 is positioned in an asymmetrical way with respect to the longitudinal body axis of the wrapper 1, i.e. if the tipping member is positioned to the right, the round bale will be tipped to the left and vice versa. In order to select the direction and speed of tipping, the lateral displacement of the tipping member with respect to the longitudinal axis of the 10 wrapper 1 may be adjustable.
The wrapper 1 comprises a controller 300, which is schematically shown in Fig.’s 1 - 3. The controller 300 is arranged to determine round bale parameters using meters and/or input described in more detail below with reference to Fig. 5. The means used to determine the round bale parameters are 15 not shown in Fig.’s 1 - 3 for reasons of clarity but will be described in more detail with respect to Fig. 5.
Based on the determined round bale parameters, the controller 300 is arranged to control the velocity and/or length of the stroke of the actuator 20.
The controller 300 may be formed as a computer device comprising 20 a processor 312 and a memory 311, the memory 311 comprising data and instructions readable and executable by the processor 312 to provide the controller 300 with the functionality in accordance with the embodiments described.
Fig. 5 schematically depicts the controller 300 and a plurality of 25 meters 302, 304 for determining one or more of the following round bale parameters a bale diameter (D), a bale length (L) and a bale weight. The bale diameter D and the bale length L are schematically depicted in Fig. 4.
Controller 300 may comprise or may be arranged to communicate with a bale dimension meter 302 for determining the bale diameter (D) and the 30 bale length (L). Instead of the bale diameter D, the bale radius R may be determined as well, as it is known that 2R = D.
The controller 300 may further comprise or may be arranged to communicate with a weighing device 304 for determining an indication of the bale weight. The meters 302, 304 may be provided on the wrapper 1 or may be 11 provided on a round baler preceding the wrapper 1.
The bale dimension meter 302 may be an optical device for determining the relevant bale dimensions and communicate this to the controller, for instance by transferring a voltage to the controller 300 representing a specific 5 bale dimension.
The weighing device 304 may comprise sensor cells which are mounted in the frame of the wrapper, for instance in the frame parts holding the wheels or in the bolts which are holding the table. The determined weight may be represented by a voltage which is communicated to the controller 300.
10 Alternatively, one or more of the bale diameter, bale length, bale weight may be received by controller 300 from a baler or may be inputted manually by an operator. Controller 300 may comprise or may be arranged to communicate with a velocity meter 306 to determine the velocity of the wrapper 1. Controller 300 may further comprise or may be arranged to communicate with an 15 inclination sensor 308 to determine the inclination of the ground 50 and/or the wrapper 1. The inclination sensor 308 may be arranged to damp relatively small variations in the measurements which are caused by relatively small bumps in the ground 50.
The velocity of the wrapper 1 can be measured with any suitable 20 means, such as with a radar sensor on the wrapper, sensors in the wheels or can be received by the controller 300 from a towing device, such as a tractor. The velocity may be communicated from the towing device to the controller wirelessly or via a wire, such as via CAN Bus.
The velocity meter 306 and the inclination sensor 308 may be 25 integrated to form a combined meter. The velocity meter 306 may for instance be provided by a GNSS-system, which may further be arranged to determine a 3D direction of movement from which the desired angle can be derived.
In case the wrapper 1 is used in combination with a bale tipper 200 as described above with reference to Fig. 3, the controller 300 may further 30 comprise or may be arranged to communicate with a bale velocity sensor 310 which is provided at or near the tipping member 211 to determine a velocity of the round bale at the position of the tipping member 211.
The bale velocity sensor 310 may be a distance light sensor mounted in the tipping member 211 to regulate the stroke and velocity of the 12 hydraulic rams. A distance light sensor sends out a light pulse towards the bale, detects the reflection of the light pulse and determines the distance between the distance light sensor and the bale by measuring the time it took the light pulse to travel back and forth. By repeating this measurement, the bale velocity can be 5 determined. Based on the determined bale velocity, the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator can be adjusted.
The required speed and/or length of the actuator to obtain a desired bale velocity at the tipping member 211 may differ for different bales.
Now, the functioning of the wrapper 1 will be described. In use, round 10 bales are discharged from the wrapper 1 by performing a method comprising a) actuating the actuator 20 to pivot the wrapping table from a wrapping position to a bale release position, b) determining at least one round bale parameter, and c) controlling the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator 20 15 based on the at least one determined round bale parameter.
The speed and/or length of the stroke of the actuator 20 may be adjusted based on the determined round bale parameters. This may be done by using look-up tables which are pre-stored in the controller 300 which provide information about the desired speed and/or length of the stroke of the actuator 20 20 for the combination of the determined round bale parameters.
In case of a hydraulic actuator 20, the speed and length of the stroke depend on the velocity and amount of oil being pumped. The speed and length of the stroke can be adjusted by adjusting the velocity of the oil and the amount of oil respectively.
25 In action b) the bale diameter and or length may be determined by the controller 300. The larger the bale dimensions, the lower the speed of the stroke of the actuator 20 and/or the smaller the length of the stroke is set in action c).
In action b) the bale weight may be determined by the controller 300. 30 The heavier the bale, the lower the speed of the stroke of the actuator 20 and/or the smaller the length of the stroke is set in action c). Of course, the bale dimensions and the bale weight may be combined.
In action b) the velocity of the wrapper 1 may be determined by the controller 300. The faster the wrapper 1 is travelling over the ground 50, the lower 13 the speed of the stroke of the actuator 20 and/or the smaller the length of the stroke is set in action c).
In action b) the angle of orientation of the wrapper 1 may be determined by the controller 300. The further the wrapper 1 is tilted downwards in 5 the direction of discharge of the round bale, the lower the speed of the stroke of the actuator 20 and/or the smaller the length of the stroke is set in action c).
Of course, the above examples may be combined in any combination. For instance, the bale diameter, the bale weight and the angle of orientation may be determined in a combined way in action b), which may result in 10 controlling the length of the stroke in action c).
With respect to the embodiment described above with reference to Fig. 3, in which a bale tipper 200 is provided, a selection of the parameters: bale dimensions, bale diameter, bale length, bale weight, velocity of the wrapper, angle of orientation of the ground/wrapper may be determined in action b). In addition to 15 this, the velocity of the round bale at the position of the tipping member 211 may be determined by the controller 300. The selection of the above parameters may be used to control the speed and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator 20 and/or to control the transversal position of the tipping member 211.
For instance, in action b) the velocity of the round bale at the position 20 of the tipping member 211 may be determined by the controller 300. If the velocity is too high, in action c) the speed of the stroke of the actuator 20 may be decreased and/or the length of the stroke of the actuator 20 may be decreased to reduce the velocity of a next round bale and/or the position of the tipping member 211 may be adjusted to a more sideways position to decrease the impact of the 25 next round bale on the tipping member 211.
Depending on the determined angle of orientation in action b), the position of the tipping member may be adjusted in action c) to ensure that the round bale is tipped in an uphill direction.
So, in general, action b) may comprise determining a selection of 30 bale dimensions, bale diameter, bale length, bale weight, velocity of the wrapper, angle of orientation of the ground/wrapper and velocity of the round bale at the position of the tipping member 211, while action c) may comprise controlling a selection of the speed of a stroke of the actuator 20, the length of a stroke of the actuator 20 and a position of the tipping member.
