Abstract

In the control of a vehicle, e.g. stacker or shovel loader, infinitely variable-speed gear, mechanical or hydraulic, of the type having two pedals 1, 2 for forward and reverse, and in which depression of one pedal raises the other, a third pedal 9 having a cross-member 8 with two stop members 10, 11 for engaging pedals 1 and 2 is also provided so that, on depressing pedal 9, whichever pedal 1, 2 had been depressed previously, pedals 1 and 2 are brought back to their central position neutralizing the gear, and facilitating engine braking. As shown, for an hydraulic gear, pedals 1 and 2 cut through bevel gears 3, 5 on a bevel gear 4 carrying a lever 12 which positions a pair of pistons 13 of a follow-up servo-system to adjust the gear. The pedal 9 may also adjust the speed of the engine; it may be connected to the ignition to stop the engine when the gear is neutralized; it may apply friction brakes to the vehicle wheels; and it may control the main clutch. Additional independent controls may be provided for engine speed and brake application. In Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) the third pedal (19) is adapted to apply a friction brake when excess pressure is applied to the pedal after normal pressure to neutralize the gear. The pedal comprises a crank lever pivoted between a pair of levers (34) carrying the cross-member 20 and its stops, and fast with a sleeve (25), a tension spring (37) connecting the pedal and the sleeve and a pair of stops being provided on the levers and pedal so that the pedal is aligned with the levers during normal operation. On applying excess pressure to the pedal, the crank lever pivots relative to the levers (34) against the action of the spring (37) to act through link work (41-46) to apply a friction brake. The forward and reverse pedals (21), (22) are also mounted on sleeves (23), (24) on opposite sides of sleeve (25) and interconnected by a lever (29) pivoted at its centre about a horizontal pin.
