DUAL FIBRE WDM BIDIRECTIONAL OPTICAL RING NETWORK S A DUAL FIBRE WDM (WAVELENGTH DIVISIONAL MULTIPLEXING) BIDIRECTIONAL OPTICAL RING NETWORK (1) IS PROVIDED WHERE ONE FIBRE (7) IS INTENDED FOR THE MAIN FIBRE RING AND ANOTHER FIBRE (9) IS PROVIDED AS A PROTECTION FIBRE RING 10 IN THE EVENT THE MAIN FIBRE RING IS RUPTURED. THE NETWORK (1) HAS A CENTRAL NODE (3) AND ONE OR MORE AR NODES (5). EACH NODE (5) COMPRISES AN OADM (OPTICAL ADD/DROP MULTIPLEXER) (25) SERIALLY OPTICALLY INTERCONNECTED WITH THE MAIN FIBRE (7). THE OADM (25) COMPRISES TWO, THREE 15 PORT CIRCULATORS (29). THE OPTICAL CIRCULATORS (29) ARE CONNECTED WITH RESPECTIVE TRANSMITTERS OR RECEIVERS (31, 35) THAT HAVE AN ASSIGNED WAVELENGTH TRANSMISSION CAPABILITY. DATA COMMUNICATION ALONG THE SELECTED WAVELENGTH CAN BE TAKEN FROM THE RESPECTIVE NODE (5) USING 20 A DSLAM (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE ACCESS MULTIPLEXER). A WAVELENGTH PASS PASSAGE (39) IS PROVIDED BETWEEN THE SERIAL INTERCONNECTION AT THE TWO OPTICAL CIRCULATORS (29) TO ALLOW PASSAGE OF WAVELENGTH CHANNELS EXCLUDING THE ASSIGNED WAVELENGTH TRANSMISSION CAPABILITY OF THE 25 RESPECTIVE TRANSMITTERS/RECEIVERS (31, 35) AT THE AR NODE.
