Abstract

The present invention discloses a system that sterilizes and compresses medical waste. The system includes a container having a gate providing access to an interior chamber. The interior chamber is coupled to a compressor and a source of heating fluid. The container also comprises a casing which encloses the interior chamber. The casing is coupled to both the source of heating fluid and a source of cooling fluid. The system operation is regulated by a controller. To sterilize and compress medical waste, the gate is initially opened and the waste is placed inside the interior chamber. The gate is closed to seal the container. Vacuum is applied to the interior chamber to retrieve humidity contained therein. Simultaneously with the vacuum generation, the heating fluid is supplied to the casing to heat the container. The heating fluid is then delivered to the interior chamber for waste sterilization. After the waste has been sterilized, vacuum is applied to retrieve the heating fluid from the interior chamber. The waste is then compressed, cooling water is introduced to the casing to quickly cool both the container and the compressed waste. The gate is finally opened, and the waste retrieved from the interior chamber.
