La presente invención se refiere a un microorganismo recombinante que comprende una o más secuencia de nucleótidos que codifican: un polipéptido que tiene actividad de ent-copalil pirofosfato sintasa; un polipéptido que tiene actividad de ent-kaureno sintasa; un polipéptido que tiene actividad de ent-kaureno oxidasa; y un polipéptido que tiene actividad de ácido kaurenoico 13-hidroxilasa, por lo que la expresión de la(s) secuencia(s) de nucleótido le confiere(n) al microorganismo la capacidad de producir al menos esteviol, y en donde dicho microorganismo recombinante ha sido modificado en su genoma de tal manera que resulta en una deficiencia en la. producción de uno o más de: (i) una fosfatasa capaz de actuar sobre geranilgeranilpirofosfato (GGPP), resultando en la formación de geranilgeraniol (GOH); (ii) una fosfatasa capaz de actuar sobre farnesilpirofosfato (FPP), resultando en la formación de farnesol y nerolidol; (iii) una exo-1,3-ß glucanasa; (iv) una glicógeno sintasa (o un polipéptido que influye en la acumulación de glicógeno); (v) un represor transcripcional de genes hipóxicos (ROX1) (vi) una NADPH oxidasa; o (vii) un transportador de monocarboxilato (JEN1) (viii) un polipéptido que tiene actividad como la codificada por el marco de lectura abierto, YJL064w; o (ix) un polipéptido del microorganismo recombinante también puede ser capaz de expresar una o más UDP-glicosiltransferasas de tal manera que el microorganismo es capaz de producir uno o más glicósidos de esteviol.
