Description
Description
COVER FOR GAS CYLINDER WITH A HANDLE HOUSING A BATTERY
Technical field [0001] The invention is directed to the field of gas cylinders, in particular for industrial and medical use. More specifically, the invention is directed to the field of taps for such gas cylinders, said taps being housed in a protecting cover.
Background art [0002] Prior art patent document published WO 2015/132092 A2 discloses a gas cylinder with a tap and a tap cover comprising a shell for housing the tap and a hook pivotally mounted on the shell. The hook is configured for securing the gas cylinder in an upright position to a horizontal bar of a hospital bed. The shell comprises reservations on its external surface configured for receiving the hook in a folded position so as to generally conform to said external surface. The use of a cover with a handle is interesting in that it provides an ergonomic protection for the tap that fulfils additional functions such as providing a handle, providing a convenient rotating flow selector and providing a hook for securing the cylinder to a bar like a bar of a hospital bed.
[0003] Prior art patent document published WO 2014/074313 A1 discloses a tap for gas cylinders, that provides a function of indicating the amount of gas left in the cylinder. To that end, the tap comprises a pressure sensor, an electronic display and an electronic control system electrically connected to the pressure sensor and the display. The control system is configured for calculating an operation time that is left until the amount of gas in the cylinder reaches a predetermined level. This calculated time is displayed with the electronic display. The electronic control system is supplied in electrical energy by a battery. This system is either affixed to the tap or to a protective cap. It comprises also switching means for detecting the angular position of a flow selector located at the top of the tap. The teaching is quite interesting by the functions that the tap can fulfil. The integration of the electronic device and of the battery remains however subject to improvements.
Summary of invention
Technical Problem [0004] The invention has for technical problem to provide a better integration of the electronic components of a tap for gas cylinders, in particular for such a tap that is equipped with a protective cover.
Technical solution [0005] The invention is directed to a cover for a tap of a gas cylinder, comprising: a shell for housing the tap; and a handle linked to the shell, said handle being for manipulating the gas cylinder; wherein the handle comprises a battery housing for supplying the tap with electrical energy.
[0006] According to a preferred embodiment, the handle extends in a main direction generally transverse to a longitudinal direction of the cylinder, and the battery housing extends in said main direction.
[0007] According to a preferred embodiment, the handle is above the shell when the cover is mounted on the gas cylinder and said cylinder is in an upright direction.
[0008] According to a preferred embodiment, the handle comprises a main part forming a cavity and a lid part attached to the main part and closing the cavity, the battery housing being at least partly formed by the cavity in the main part.
[0009] According to a preferred embodiment, the external surface of the lid part is complementary to the external surface of the main part, said external surfaces forming a gripping surface of the handle.
[0010] According to a preferred embodiment, the lid part is made of a material that is softer than a material of the main part.
[0011] According to a preferred embodiment, the main part is made of rigid plastic material and the lid part is made of elastomeric material.
[0012] According to a preferred embodiment, each of the main part and the lid part has a generally half-circular cross-section.
[0013] According to a preferred embodiment, the main part comprises at least one rib, preferably two ribs, said rib(s) extending in the cavity, perpendicularly to the main axis, so as to form support(s) for electrical contact(s) with the at least one battery.
[0014] According to a preferred embodiment, the at least one rib is unitary with the main part of the handle.
[0015] According to a preferred embodiment, the handle is generally cylindrical. [0016] According to a preferred embodiment, the cover comprises at least one lateral portion linking the handle with the shell, and electrical wires extending from the battery housing to the shell through said at least one lateral linking portion.
[0017] According to a preferred embodiment, the at least one lateral linking portion is unitary with the handle and/or with at least a portion of the shell.
[0018] The invention is also directed to a tap assembly for a gas cylinder, comprising a tap; a cover with a shell housing the tap and with a handle linked to the shell for manipulating the gas cylinder when the assembly is mounted on said cylinder; wherein the cover is according to the invention, the battery housing being electrically connected to the tap for electrically supplying said tap.
[0019] According to a preferred embodiment, the tap comprises a pressure detector, a digital display and an electronic unit electrically connected to the pressure detector and the display, said electronic unit being electrically connected to the battery housing.
Advantages of the invention [0020] The invention is particularly interesting in that it provides a practical location and housing for the battery or batteries that electrically supply any kind of electronic device attached to the cover, like an electronic display and/or an electronic unit. The handle of a cover for a tap of a gas cylinder must per definition be relatively resistant and must ideally provide a comfortable gripping surface. A gas cylinder is indeed quite heavy and requires a proper handling to avoid injuries and/or muscular and pains (e.g. in the back). The use of the handle for housing the battery/batteries is particularly interesting for it provides an adequate volume and also an easy access for the replacement of said battery/batteries. In addition, the use of a softer material for the lip part of the handle, covering the cavity in the main part, is particularly adequate for providing a proper water tightness without using additional gasket means.
Brief description of the drawings [0021] Figure 1 is a picture-like view of an assembly comprising a gas cylinder, a tap and a cover in accordance with the invention.
[0022] Figure 2 is a perspective view of the back of the cover of figure 1, where the back portion of the handle of the cover is in a distant position from the main portion.
[0023] Figure 3 is a detailed view of the back of the main portion of the handle housing a battery.
[0024] Figure 4 corresponds to figure 3 where the battery is not present.
Description of an embodiment [0025] Figure 1 illustrate a gas cylinder assembly 2 consisting of a gas cylinder 4 and a tap assembly. This latter comprises, essentially, a cover 6 and a tap (not quite visible) housed in said cover 6. The cover 6 comprises a shell 8 housing the tap, and a handle 10 fixed or linked to the shell 8.
[0026] As is visible in figure 1, the shell 8 comprises a disk 81 that is rotatably mounted and that cooperates with the tap for adjusting the outlet pressure and/or flow rate of said tap. A digital display 12 is located at the centre of the disk. This latter is transparent for permitting a convenient reading of the indications of the digital display 12.
[0027] As is still visible in figure 1, the shell 8 comprises also an opening 82 through which a connector 14 of the type “hose barb” extends. This connector is in direct connection with the tap and is preferably supported by said tap.
[0028] Figure 2 illustrates the cover 6 with an exploded view of the handle 10. The handle 10 comprises a main part 101 forming a cavity that houses a battery 18, and a lid part 102 that is to be attached to the main part and to close the cavity. The main part 101 is preferably unitary with the shell 8. In the present embodiment, the shell 8 is constituted essentially of two halves 83 and 84 in contact with each other along a contact plan 16. Each of said shell-halves 83 and 84 is generally in the shape of a half-sphere. Still in the present embodiment, the handle 10 is rigidly linked to the shell-halve 84 by two lateral portions 20.
[0029] The lid part 102 is preferably attached to the main part (101) by means of screws.
[0030] The handle 10 extends preferably in a direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder, so as to be generally horizontal when the cylinder is in upright position. The handle 10 can comprise formations on its outer surface where these formations can correspond to the fingers of a hand of an operator. These formations are not represented in the figures. They are advantageously formed on a lower portion of the external surface of said handle, such formations forming thereby a gripping surface for an operator lifting the cylinder by exerting a traction on the handle.
[0031] As is visible in figure 2, the lid part 102 of the handle 10 can comprise a central portion and lateral portions that are designed to contact and conform to the lateral portions 20 connecting the handle main part 101 to the shell 8.
[0032] The handle main part 101 and the shell 8 (i.e. the shell-halves 83 and 84) are advantageously made of rigid plastic whereas the lid part 102 can be made of softer material, like elastomer. The material of the lid part 102 can be selected to have a hardness comprised between 80 and 100° Shore. The use of soft material for the lip part 102 is particularly interesting in that it provides a tight contact with the main part 101 without the need of a joint or any other kind of contact means.
[0033] As this is partly visible in figure 2, the lip part 102 forms also a cavity that is complementary to the cavity formed by the main part 101. The external surface of the lip part 102 is also complementary to the external surface of the main part 101, so as to provide a smooth continuous gripping surface.
[0034] Figures 3 and 4 are detailed view of the handle without the lip part. In figure 3, the battery 18 is located in the cavity of the main part 101 whereas in figure 4 the battery is absent.
[0035] With reference to figures 3 and 4, the cavity of the main part 101 of the handle comprises two ribs 22 that extend essentially perpendicularly to the main direction of the handle. These ribs 22 can be integrally formed with the main part 101. Each of the ribs 22 supports a metallic tongue 24 that forms an electrical contact with the battery 18. These electrical contacts are connected via the wire 26 to the tap or at least a component thereof like the digital display 12 (figure 1).
[0036] The battery 18 is advantageously of cylindrical shape, for example of the AA or AAA type. In the present embodiment, a single battery 18 is housed in the handle. It is however understood that the handle can house several batteries, in particular several cylindrically shaped batteries aligned along the main axis of the handle and electrically connected in series.
