종래 횡편기의 코줄임 방법은 인위적인 방법과 기계적인 방법이 알려지고 있으나 인위적인 방법은 사람이 직접 바늘코를 걸어주면서 줄이는 방법으로 코줄임작업이 매우 더디어서 비능률적일 뿐만 아니라 코줄임부분의 편직상태가 양호하지 못한 문제점이 있었으며 캐리지가 좌우로 이동되면서 바늘코를 줄이는 방법이 알려지고 있으나 이와 같은 방법은 양쪽코를 동시에 줄일 수가 없으므로 우측코 또는 좌측코를 먼저 줄인 다음 다른쪽 코를 줄이는 동작을 하기 때문에 후방 바늘집의 한 쪽 코줄임바늘에 코를 걸어주는 작동과 한 번 엮어주는 동작때문에 캐리지가 좌우로 한 번 왕복하게 되고 다시 반대쪽 코를 줄이기 위해 좌우로 왕복동작을 해야 됨으로 코를 한번 줄이는 데 캐리지가 두번 왕복해야 되는 문제점이 있었던 것이다.Conventionally, the nose reduction method of the flat knitting machine is known to be artificial and mechanical methods, but the artificial method is a method of reducing the human hand by applying a needle nose, and the nose reduction work is very slow.
