Abstract

The stay for a suitcase has two arms(16,18), each with a hole(20,22) at one end for rivetting to the body & lid of the case resp. The other ends have central holes(42,28,30) for a hinge pin(32) in the form of a rivet. A disk spring(40) is retained by the rivet to bias the arms together. One arm has a curved slot(33) & hole(34) central on the hinge to accept a steel ball*(38) held in a recess(36) in the other arm. This allows relatively free movement of the stay for part of the opening, and then increased resistance until the ball snaps into the hole to hold the lid in its open position.
