도 2 는 도 1 의 액정 표시 장치에 사용되는 액정 셀의 개략 단면도이다.
도 3 은 VA 모드에 있어서의 액정 분자의 배향 상태를 설명하는 개략 단면도이다.
도 4 는 도 1 의 액정 표시 장치에 있어서의 면광원 장치의 구성을 설명하는 개략 단면도이다.
도 5 는 도 4 의 면광원 장치의 도광판의 출광측 단위 광학 요소 및 이면측 단위 광학 요소의 형상을 설명하는 개략도이다.
도 6 은 도광판 및 프리즘 시트로부터의 출사광의 상태를 나타내는 도면이다.
도 7 은 입사각과 P 성분과 S 성분의 각종 관계를 나타내는 도면이다.
도 8 은 도 4 의 면광원 장치의 프리즘 시트의 단위 프리즘을 설명하는 개략도이다.
도 9 는 단위 프리즘의 다른 실시형태를 나타내는 개략도이다.

Claims (5)
- 관찰자측에 형성되는 제 1 편광판과 배면측에 형성되는 제 2 편광판 사이에 액정 셀을 구비하는 액정 표시 패널과, 상기 액정 표시 패널을 배면측에서 조명하는 면광원 장치를 구비하고,
상기 면광원 장치는,
광원부와,
상기 광원부로부터의 광을 상기 광원부에 대향하는 입광면으로부터 입사시키고, 상기 액정 표시 패널과 대향하는 출광면으로부터, 광의 도광 방향과 대략 평행한 면내에 있어서 상기 출광면의 법선 방향으로부터 소정의 각도를 이루는 제 1 방향에 최대 강도의 지향성을 갖고, 또한 상기 면내에서 진동하는 편광 성분의 비율이 높은 편광광인 제 1 지향성광을 출사하는 도광판과,
상기 도광판보다 상기 액정 표시 패널측에 배치되고, 상기 도광판측에 볼록한 주상의 단위 프리즘이 복수 배열된 프리즘부를 구비하고, 상기 제 1 지향성광을, 그 편광 상태를 실질적으로 유지하면서 상기 도광판의 상기 출광면의 법선 방향으로부터 소정 각도 내의 제 2 방향으로 지향한 제 2 지향성광으로서 출광하는 프리즘 시트를 구비하고,
상기 단위 프리즘의 능선 방향은, 상기 도광판의 상기 입광면에 대략 평행이고,
상기 제 2 편광판의 투과축은, 상기 제 2 지향성광의 편광 방향과 상기 도광판의 광의 도광 방향에 대략 평행하고 있고,
상기 제 2 편광판의 투과축은, 상기 제 1 편광판의 투과축과 대략 직교하고 있는, 액정 표시 장치. - 제 1 항에 있어서,
상기 프리즘 시트가, 상기 프리즘부보다 상기 액정 표시 패널측에 상기 프리즘부를 지지하는 기재부를 구비하고, 상기 기재부가 실질적으로 광학적으로 등방성을 갖는, 액정 표시 장치. - 제 1 항 또는 제 2 항에 있어서,
상기 제 1 지향성광이, 상기 광의 도광 방향과 대략 평행한 면내에서 진동하는 편광 성분을 52 % 이상 함유하는, 액정 표시 장치. - 제 1 항 내지 제 3 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
상기 도광판이 광 산란제를 함유하고, 또한 상기 도광판의 이면측에 볼록한 주상의 이면측 단위 광학 요소가, 상기 도광판의 상기 입광면측으로부터 반대측의 측면에 복수 배열되고,
상기 단위 프리즘의 배열 방향이 상기 이면측 단위 광학 요소의 배열 방향과 대략 평행인, 액정 표시 장치. - 제 1 항 내지 제 4 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
상기 면광원 장치와 상기 제 1 편광판 사이에 편광 선택 반사 시트를 추가로 구비하는, 액정 표시 장치.
