기존방법에 의한 것은 원석을 그대로 가공하는 방법에 관한 것이었으며, 보다 구체적인 과정은 다음과 같다. 먼저 불순물 제거를 위한 1차 드라이건조를 시키며, 고온으로 표면을 가열하여 용융되도록하는 2차 가열을 실시하게된다. 이후 자연냉각시켜 독특한 요철의 표면을 가지도록하는 방법이었다. 이러한 방법에 의한 원석의 가공방법은 원석 그 자체를 조형물등으로 활용하는데에는 적합하지만, 이를 절단하여 특정의 판상부재를 만들 경우에는 고온에 의해 표면이 용융되어 냉각됨에 따라 크랙이 발생되고 표면에 존재하는 기공이 그대로 들어나 보이게되는 문제점이 있었다. 또한, 이와같이 표면이 심한 요철을 이루면서 형성됨에 의해 적용분야에 제한이 따르는 문제점도 있었다.The existing method was related to the method of processing the raw stone as it is, more specific process is as follows. 다음으로는 예열 후 제품의 표면에 대한 다듬질공정을 거치게되며, 이를 위해서 먼저 가공품의 표면을 2500∼3500℃의 온도조건으로 고온가열시켜 표면부가 용융되도록한다. 대략 화산석의 용융온도는 1700℃이며 따라서 이 이상의 온도로 표면부를 가열시킴으로 액상화되도록하고 목적하는 온도에 도달된 후에는 서서히냉각시키도록 한다. 냉각시에는 단계적으로 온도를 낮추도록함으로서 급격한 냉각에 따른 조직의 균열등의 문제를 예방토록한다. 이와 같은 단계적인 냉각을 수행하여 화산석의 용융점인 1700℃ 근처에 이르러 응고되기 전의 상태에서 표면이 평탄화되도록 다듬질을 하도록한다. 표면 다듬질시에는 금속판등을 이용하면되고 이렇게함으로서 화산석 자체에 존재하는 큰 기공을 덮어 보이지않도록 할 수 있다.Next, after preheating, the surface of the product is trimmed.
