통상적으로, 항공기 및 선박 등 이동체의 위치 측정을 위해서는 GPS(GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM) 위성이 이용되고 있다. 상기 위성으로부터 수신되는 각종 데이터를 분석함으로써, 현재 자신이 위치한 지역의 위치를 알 수 있다. 근래 상기와 같이 자신이 있는 곳의 위치를 측정할 수 있고, 통화기능도 수행할 수 있는 단말기들이 개발되고 있다. 그러나 단순히 단말기가 있는 곳의 위치만을 알려줄뿐 일정 거리에 근접한 특정 가입자가 발생하였을 시에 이를 자동으로 알려주는 서비스(페밀리위치정보 서비스)는 이루어지고 있지 않다. 즉, 페밀리에 가입된 사용자가 자신의 근처에 여타의 페밀리 사용자가 있을 경우 이를 알려주는 서비스는 없었다. 상기와 같이 페밀리에 가입된 사용자가 여타의 사용자 위치를 알기 위해서는 수시로 전화를 걸어 다른 가입자의 위치를 물어보아야 하는 번거로움이 있다.In general, a GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite is used to measure the position of a moving object such as an aircraft or a ship.
