생활수준의 향상으로 건물 실내공기의 질 향상과 웰빙에 대한 욕구가 높아지고, 새집증후군이 사회문제화 되면서 최근 국내에서도 집단 주거용 및 학교건물을 대상으로 환기설비가 의무화 되었고, 특히 자동차는 이제 이동수단을 넘어 하나의 생활공간으로 인식되고 자동차 실내 쾌적성의 중요요소중 하나인 공기의 질 향상이 요구 되고 있는 가운데 자동차 실내 환경은 다양한 소재의 내장재와 접착제가 밀폐된 자동차 실내의 좁은 공간에 사용되기 때문에 차량 실내에서 발생되는 유기용제(VOC), 냄새, 곰팡이, 미세먼지, 담배연기 등 각종 오염물질을 신속하게 배출해야 하고, 산소부족으로 인한 졸음방지와 보다 쾌적한 자동차 실내 환경조성을 위해 극 심하게 오염된 외기를 청정하게 처리해 공급하기 위한 여러 가지 수단으로 단순히 급기 및 배기만을 수동 또는 자동으로 행하는 환기장치가 실시되고 있지만 에어컨디셔너 가동 시 급배기를 동시에 행하지 않고 강제 배기만 행할 경우 오염된 외기가 틈새로 침입되며, 강재 급기만 행할 경우 틈새로 냉난방 된 공기가 유출되기 때문에 유출 또는 침입되는 공기 중의 에너지를 회수할 수 없으므로 막대한 에너지 손실이 발생하여 연비가 크게 저하되고 있다. 또한 환기 수단으로 창문 개방 시 에너지 손실뿐 아니라 소음과 매연의 침입으로 매우 열악하고 불쾌한 자동차 살내 환경을 피할 수 없게 되는 문제점이 있다. 또한 고유가 시대에 에너지 절약에 대한 요구가 더욱 크게 증대되고 있는 실정이다.Increasing living standards have increased the quality of indoor air quality and the desire for well-being, and the new house syndrome has become a social issue.
