PURPOSE:To form a highly fine multi-gradation full-color image on the face side of a recording paper and two-valued images such as characters on the back side of the paper, by providing an ink sheet coated with at least three sublimable color inks and at least one heat-fusible ink, and a means for reversing the recording paper face side back. CONSTITUTION:An ink sheet 16 comprises parts 16A coated with sublimable inks of three colors of yellow Y, magenta M and cyan C, and parts 16B coated wit a heat-fusible ink of a single color of black Bk. When printing of a color image is completed, a guide vane 2 is driven to the platen side by a drive source, and the tip of the vane 23 is brought into contact with a platen roller 12, whereby a recording paper 24 is separated from the platen roller 12, and is guided to a pinch roller 21B. The driving of the pinch roller 21B is once stopped, a character image printing mode is set, then the guide vane 23 is tilted to the side of the pinch roller 21B, and the paper 24 is set to the platen roller 12 face side back. A thermal head 10 is brought into contact with a leading end part of the black heat-fusible ink Bk, and printing of characters is started. The printing direction for the character images is utterly opposite to that for the color image.
