Abstract

PURPOSE:To stably produce an ultraviolet-absorbing substance, in high efficiency, by extracting the ultraviolet-absorbing substance from a tissue-culture lavender cell with an organic solvent, a mixture of an organic solvent and water or an acidic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A callus induced from a tissue of a plant of genus Lavandula is subjected to tissue culture in a callus proliferation basal medium or an amino acid-containing medium produced by adding an amino acid to the above callus proliferation basal medium or a modified medium produced by adjusting the total inorganic salt nitrogen content of the callus proliferation basal medium to <=40mM. The obtained cultured lavender cell is extracted with an organic solvent, a mixture of an organic solvent and water or an acidic solvent to obtain the objective ultraviolet-absorbing substance. The tissue culture temperature of the callus induced from the tissue of the Lavandula plant is 10-35 deg.C, preferably 20-25 deg.C.
