Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve a nonlinear optical effect by incorporating a specific compd. having an electron-attracting atom or electron-attracting group, electron- domating group and electron system into the titled material. CONSTITUTION:This material contains at least the compd. expressed by formula I. In formula I, R<1> and R<2> are the electron-attracting atom or electron-attracting group; R<3> and R<4> are a straight chain or branched chain alkyl group or alkoxy group; X is a substituent having a hydrogen atom which permits hydrogen bonding. The biphenyl compd. expressed by formula I is the intramolecular charge transfer type compd. in which the benzene skeleton having the electron- attracting atom or electron-attracting group is bonded to the benzene skeleton substd. with the substituent exhibiting an electron-domating property and having the hydrogen atom permitting hydrogen bonding and the electrons are largely transferred by electron transition and, therefore, the nonlinear optical constant betaat a molecular level is large. The nonlinear optical effect is thereby improved.
