Abstract

PURPOSE: To intensify brightness in the curved part direction of an envelope, by intensifying internal surface brightness of a phosphor layer observed through partly a short end part in the lateral direction of an envelope higher than external surface brightness of the phosphor layer on the main unit part of the envelope. CONSTITUTION: An arc discharge lamp 10 is provided with a sealed envelope 12. A pair of electrode 14, 16 are arranged apart in the envelope 12, during the operation of the lamp 10, an arc discharge is generated therebetween. The envelope 12 is provided with leg part members 28, 30 extended lengthwise. The envelope 12 is provided with the main unit part 36, members 28, 30 and respectively related lateral direction short end parts 38, 40. On an internal surface 34 of the member 36, a phosphor layer 26 is arranged. This layer 26 is not coated on at least partly internal surface of the parts 38, 40. During the operation of the lamp, internal surface brightness of the layer 26 observed through a phosphor non-provided part of the parts 38, 40 can be intensified high than external surface brightness of the layer 26 on the member 36. An intensified surface brightness region can be changed by changing a diameter of the envelope 12.
