Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a filler for paper useful for newsprint or the like, having a particle structure comprising a core of clay mineral particles and a shell of amorphous silica, provided with a combination of a high oil-absorbing capacity and opacity, and reduced in viscosity. CONSTITUTION: This filler has a particle structure comprising (A) a core of phyllosilicate type clay mineral particles and (B) a shell of amorphous silica firmly bound to the surface of component B in the weight ratio of A/B of (1 to 0.1) to (1 to 10), having an oil-absorbing capacity of >=60 ml/100 g and a hiding power of <=98 mm, and provided with >=80% of R value (retention of absorbed oil) defined by the formula R=(A1 /A0 )×100% [A0 is an absorbed oil before the filler is crushed under a pressure; and A1 is an absorbed oil when crushed in jet mill under a pressure of 8.0 kg/cm<2> (gage)].
