Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce NOx contained in exhaust gas without using any reducing substance by providing both a first catalyst comprising alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, platinum and nickel, and a second catalyst for purifying NOx in the downstream side thereof. CONSTITUTION:In a first catalyst 1, carbon in exhaust gas is allowed to react with steam by catalytic action of platinum and gaseous hydrogen and gaseous carbon monoxide are generated and thereby the exhaust gas is made a reductive atmosphere. Further, the promotion of decomposition of hydrocarbon, storage effect of oxygen and deposition control of carbon are made by nickel carried on the coating layer of the first catalyst 1. Furthermore, since at least one kind of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal is carried on the first catalyst 1, gasification of carbon due to steam is promoted and carbon is removed from the surface of nickel. Therefore, NOx is effectively reduced by a second catalyst 2 in the downstream side and NOx amount is reduced.
