Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the costs of transporting aquatic animals such as fishes, cephalopodans, pelecypodans or crustaceans and of selecting their fry, by introducing nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide into water, thereby allowing the aquatic animals to sleep and preventing injury of the body caused by unfavour. CONSTITUTION:Aquatic animals are allowed to sleep by simultaneously blowing nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide, preferably their mixed gases, through water or by placing the aquatic animals in N2O-blown water and subsequently transferring the aquatic animals into CO2-blown water. For example, the mixed gases having a mixing ratio range of CO2:N2O of 1:8-1:10 is blown through water until the blown water gives a pH of 6.2-5.8 in the case of sea breams, swell fishes, flat fishes, lobsters or the like, while the mixed gases having a mixing ratio range of CO2:N2O of 1:10-1:30 is blown through water until the blown water gives a pH of 6.8-6.3 in the case of young yellowtail, file fishes, cuttlefishes or the like, thereby permitting the smooth sedation and narcosis of the aquatic animals.
