Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer having a specific molecular weight and an ABA-type structure wherein A is alkyl methacrylate and B is 2- hydroxymethyl acrylate, having excellent transparency, oxygen-permeability and bio-compatibility, etc., and useful as contact lens, etc. CONSTITUTION:A block copolymer expressed by formula A-B-A and having a number-average molecular weight of >=30,000 is produced by using a monomer consisting of (A) a segment A containing a compound of formula (R<1> is 1-4C alkyl, fluoroalkyl, etc.) (e.g. methyl methacrylate) accounting for >=80wt.% of the constituent monomer units and (B) a segment B containing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate accounting of >=80wt.% of the constituent monomer units, polymerizing the component B using a polymerization initiator such as [(2-methoxy-2- methyl-1-propenyl)oxy]trimethylsilane, adding the component A to the polymerization product and polymerizing the mixture to obtain the objective copolymer wherein the number-average molecular weights of the components A and B are 5,000-50,000 each and the weight ratio of the component B to the whole copolymer is 20-70%.
