Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform self-diagnostic operation in a normal use state by providing a liquid crystal shutter, whose light transmissivity is changed by the change of the applied voltage, in an about middle position between a light emitting part and a light receiving part which are arranged oppositely to each other. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal shutter 5 whose transmissivity of light 15 emitted from a light emitting part 1 is changed in accordance with the change of the applied voltage and a voltage adjusting part 7 which changes the voltage applied to the liquid crystal shutter 5 are provided in an about middle position between the light emitting part 1 and light receiving part 3. At the time of self-diagnosis, the voltage adjusting part 7 is operated to gradually raise the voltage applied to the liquid crystal shutter 5 from 0V. It is checked whether an alarm output circuit of the light receiving part 3 is operated or not when the light transmissivity of the liquid crystal shutter 5 is equal to that of a prescribed quantity of smoke 10. Thus, the self-diagnostic operation of a smoke sensor is facilitated and the reliability of the smoke sensor is considerably improved.
