Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture an element of an arbitrary shape which has a high ratio of a peak resistance value to a room-temperature resistance value and whose thermal distribution is excellent without causing a local trip by a method wherein a metal powder as a high thermal-conduction particle is contained in a composition formed by dispersing carbon black as a conductive particle in a polymer. CONSTITUTION:At least carbon black is used as a conductive particle to be dispersed in a polymer; in addition, it is used by combining a particle of a conductive substance such as a silver powder, a gold powder or the like. The thermal-conductive particle to be dispersed in the polymer contains at least one substance selected from, e.g., nickel, silver, copper, gold, aluminum, magnesium, molybdenum, tungsten, zinc, cobalt, cadmium, iron, platinum and lead which gives moderate thermal conductivity and which offers a PTC element whose thermal distribution is good. A particle diameter, a specific area or the like of this thermal-conductive particle is to be, e.g., 1-50mum; its average particle diameter is preferably 2-20mum. A mixing ratio of the polymer to the particle is 10-480wt.% with reference to the weight of the carbon black contained in this PTC composition.
