Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a pulsed laser whose peak value is high together with its gain by a method wherein, in a laser resonator using an acousto-optic Q switch, a laser is resonated by a beam of other than a zero-order beam of the acousto-optic Q switch. CONSTITUTION:Because a laser resonator is constituted by a firstorder beam 7 of an AO Q switch 2, only a zero-order beam 6 is obtained when an RF signal is turned OFF, a resonance condition is not satisfied and a laser is not resonated. That is, a loss is in a state close to 100 % and a Q value of the resonator is lowered. However, because the excitation by a lamp for laser medium excitation use continues, an inversion distribution inside a laser medium is increased. If ultrasonic waves are turned on the moment this inversion distribution has reached a maximum, the Q value of a first-order diffraction beam suddenly becomes high; a Q switch pulse using an axis of the first-order diffraction beam is obtained.
