Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound shown by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are 2-16C n-alkyl; X and Y are -CO2- or -OCO-; n is 0 or 1; * is asymmetric carbon) or a racemic modification thereof. EXAMPLE:Optically active n-octyloxybenzoic acid 4-{4-[1-(n-hexyloxycarbonyl) ethyloxy]phenoxycarbonyl}phenyl ester. USE:A component for liquid crystal composition, colorless or light yellow in pure state, chemically stable, has a wide temperature range of liquid crystal, excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal substances, being blended to provide a liquid crystal composition having a wide liquid crystal temperature range and excellent response characteristics. PREPARATION:For example, a 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acid halide is reacted with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid 4-[1-(n-alkyloxycarbonyl)ethyloxy]phenyl ester and esterified to give a compound shown by the formula.
