Abstract

PURPOSE:To curtail useless power consumption by lowering an output constant- current value of a switching regulator, and decreasing the light emission quantity of a xenon short arc lamp, in a period in which an optical path of the xenon short arc lamp is shielded. CONSTITUTION:Synchronizing pulses of R, G and B are inputted to a color signal synchronizing circuit 22 from a synchronizing pulse input terminal 20 and synchronized. Subsequently, the output signal of the color signal synchronizing circuit 22 is supplied to a pulse generating circuit 24, and a pulse corresponding to the light quantity required for an image pickup of each color component is generated. This pulse is supplied to a switching circuit 16 in a switching regulator 14. The light emission quantity of a xenon short arc lamp 10 depends on pulse width of a switching pulse and a switching frequency of the inside of the switching circuit 16, therefore, by controlling them in accordance with the synchronizing pulse the light emission quantity can be controlled in accordance with the light quantity required. In such a way, the power consumption of the lamp can be varied in accordance with the light quantity required, and a useless power consumption can be curtailed.
