Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the titled composite material, having excellent isotropic properties of flexural strength, impact strength, etc., by pressing a mixture of carbon short fibers with a carbonizable organic compound by a specific method and firing the resultant formed compact. CONSTITUTION:Carbon short fibers (e.g. polyacrylonitrile or pitch based fibers) having 1-100mm fiber length and 300-300,000 fibers bonded into a bundle are mixed with a carbonizable organic compound (e.g. tar or pitch) as a binder at a weight ratio so as to provide 15-75vol.% ratio of the carbon short fibers in the final product after firing. The resultant mixture is partially taken and a sufficient pressure is applied only to one direction and determine compressibility from amount of compression. The residual mixture is then pressed and formed so as to be successively compressed from the three directions by 1/3 of the obtained compressibility. The resultant compact is then fired and impregnated with the afore-mentioned organic compound, refired and then subjected to graphitization treatment to afford the aimed carbon-carbon composite material.
