Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the fatigue strength of the title parts by carburizing or carbonitriding and hardening an alloy steel having a specified composition, and shot-peening the alloy steel while increasing the shot hardness and shot projecting velocity in a specified range. CONSTITUTION:The alloy steel consisting of 0.10-0.40% C, 0.06%<=Si<0.15%, 0.30-1.00% Mn, 0.90-1.20% Cr, 0.30%<Mo<=0.50%, and the balance Fe is carburized and hardened or carbonitrided and hardened. Shot-peening is then applied to the alloy steel at HRC 50-58 shot hardness and at 60-120m/sec shot projecting velocity. In such a constitution, the amt. of Mo effective to hardenability and preventing intergranular oxidation is increased, and the amt. of Si promoting remarkably intergranular oxidation and unrelated to hardenability is decreased to obtain the abovementioned composition. The depth of the surface abnormal layer of the carburized or carbonitrided and hardened alloy steel can be reduced to <=about 15mu under the influence of both components, and a residual compressive stress higher than before can be formed on the steel surface under the shot-peening conditions.
