Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable multi-division driving in a range which cannot be realized with a TN liquid crystal by utilizing chiral smectic C (SmC*) and impressing a DC voltage thereto to change the stable state of ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules, then impressing an AC voltage thereto. CONSTITUTION:One of two sheets of polarizing plates 10, 10 of a panel formed by utilizing SmC* is disposed in such a manner that the polarizing direction 5 thereof coincides with the molecular axis direction of the molecules existing in either state of + or -theta and another sheet is placed similarly in the molecular axis direction 3 or with inclination by 90 deg.. A scanning electrode group has scanning electrodes which are selected uniterruptedly. In addition, signal voltages are impressed to the scanning electrode group in such a manner that such AC voltage as not to invert the stable state of the ferroelectric liquid crytal is impressed to the picture elements on the non-selected scanning electrodes by the combination with the non-selected scanning voltage. The multi-divisions which are not possible with an LCD of a TN type are thereby enabled.
