Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for polyesters, etc., without any problems of waste water treatment, etc., by decomposing and dehydrogenating novel 3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)- cyclohexanecarboxylic acids used as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:Novel 3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acids expressed by formula I (R is H or lower alkyl) are used as a raw material and subjected to decomposition reaction in the presence of a base or acid catalyst, preferably a strong basic catalyst, such as sodium hydroxide, and then dehydrogenation reaction is carried our in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst, such as Raney nickel, in the same step to afford the aimed compound. Furthermore, the novel compounds expressed by formula I are obtained by reacting cyclohexanone-3-carboxylic acids expressed by formula II with phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The compounds expressed by formula II are obtained by, e.g. reacting 3-hydroxybenzoic acid with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst.
