Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound in high selectivity without passing through a diester, by the presence of an alkaline or alkaline earth metal in a reaction solution in hydrolyzing xylylene dichloride to produce the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:Xylylene dichloride is reacted with water in the presence of an alkaline or alkaline earth metal formate, e.g. sodium formate, potassium formate, lithium formate, calcium formate and/or magnesium formate, preferably at 70-250 deg.C, especially 80-170 deg.C temperature to afford xylylene glycol useful as a raw material for polyesters or additive for polymers in high selectivity which cannot be attained by a conventional technique with advantages in cost using the inexpensive formate according to the method without passing through intermediates.
