Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel polymer, having recurring units of a specific structure, capable of exhibiting a ferroelectric phase even at about ordinary temperature with a high speed of response to external factors and displaying moving pictures and useful also as display elements for wide or bent screens. CONSTITUTION:The aimed polymer consisting of recurring units expressed by formula I {R<1> is H, CH3, etc.; l is an integer of 1-20; k is an integer of 1-30; A is O or -COO-; m is 0 or 1; R<2> is formula II or III [Y is -COO- or -OCO-; R<3> is -COOR<4>, -R<4>, etc.; R<4> is formula IV (X is halogen; p is an integer of 0-5; q is an integer of 1-5; C* is asymmetric carbon atom)], etc.}. Furthermore, the above-mentioned polymer is obtained by, e.g. reacting a compound expressed by formula V with a compound expressed by formula VI (X<1> is halogen) to provide a compound expressed by formula VII and polycondensing the resultant compound with a dicarboxylic acid halide expressed by formula VIII.
