Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect submergence points accurately and quickly, by providing an expansion inhibiting material outside a water absorption expanding material covering the entire circumference of a tension member to arrange an optical fiber deviated from the center of the material.
CONSTITUTION: In case of a submergence accident, a water absorption material 4 absorbs moisture near a submergence part thereof to be swelled, causing a volume expansion while the volume expansion is suppressed at a part which an expansion inhibiting material 5 abuts. With the suppression thereof, a side pressure is applied to an optical fiber 2 to cause a bending such as microbending in the optical fiber 2. An increase in loss of transmission light due to the microbending caused in the optical fiber 2 is detected by measuring reflected light such as backscattered light of light incident from an input end of the optical fiber 2, thereby enabling detection of the generation of a submergence accident and the position of the generation accurately and quickly.
