PURPOSE:To improve mercury gas depression effect of a negative electrode active material by a method wherein an element such as lead, etc., which raises hydrogen overvoltage is added to molten zinc, and the alloy is made by an atomizing method; after that in dry condition it is made to have contact with liquid mercury or liquid mercury compound. CONSTITUTION:A molten zinc alloy which is a mixture of molten zinc and at least more than one kind of elements, lead, indium, cadmium, thallium and gallium, is sprayed to obtain a zinc alloy powder; then the zinc alloy powder and liquid mercury or a compound of liquid mercury and more than one kind of the elements, lead, indium, cadmium, thallium and gallium, are amulgamated in a reaction vessel by a dry method to obtain amulgamated zinc alloy powder. The amulgamated zinc alloy powder can be manufactured by only a step of dry surface processing for amulgamation. If the alloy powder is used for the active material of a negative electrode 3 of an alkaline battery the generation of mercury gas can be depressed at a low amulgamation.
